Service Description

Join Hannah Atherton for an afternoon learning the basics of oil paint at Canning House. Telling a story with oils. We will start the day setting up a scene for us to paint. We will have a model and loads of props to play with to create a narrative. Think ‘tableau vivant’ style (French for ‘living pictures’). The first part of the workshop will involve simple paintings, based on just the shape and colour of our scene to get us used to the medium. We will have a break for lunch and revisit with a conversation on narrative, and the story we are trying to tell with our work. How much of a story can you tell with few words? We will use the afternoon to focus on tone and shading, getting more into the wonderful things oil paint can do! Finally, we will ‘caption’ our works with our chosen words! You will go home with a canvas (or two) of your work from the day. They will take a couple of days to dry so keep this in mind when transporting home! We can also keep the works in the school until they have dried for you to pick up later. Hang them in your home with pride and watch them become the best conversation starters! What you will learn in my classes: • The basics of oil paint • How to approach painting from life (Including how to construct and light a scene for painting) • How to choose and mix colours • How to apply the paint with mediums • How to ‘erase’ or fix mistakes For beginners, I hope this class will leave you with confidence in using the medium, and a better understanding on the process and basics of painting. Experienced painters can expect to be challenged and pushed to try a way of painting/ thinking that they may not have attempted before!
